I’ve had the distinct pleasure of listening to Tim Hickman , Partner at White & Case LLP speak to Tel Aviv marketers crowd yesterday about What we’ve learned after 1 year of GDPR regulation.

Tim explained that although no major fines were handed so far ( France/ Google are the exception) the regulation had a profound impact on companies and additional privacy regulation is coming. Tim who is a privacy expert (having worked at Google and with companies such as Facebook) suggests to beware of “self-proclaimed” GDPR experts (especially if they say they have 5 years’ experience in GDPR), and says it’s recommended to consult with European law firms who deal with the regulators on a daily basis.

Tim walked us through why and how is GDPR relevant for Israeli companies and emphasized that the regulation is mainly relevant for technological organizations (as they process masses of personal data) but more specifically, for B2C companies or ones that have EU offices.

Otherwise, Israeli companies will only be subject to it if they work with EU companies that require them to sign an agreement stating that they are GDPR compliance.

For most Israeli B2B companies the governing law is the E-privacy regulation (that covers the use of cookies, e-mail marketing), it does not apply to non-EU companies, but it is in the process for being altered as so that it will apply to non-EU companies marketing to EU citizens.
